The U.K. Health and Safety Executive define STRESS as:
"the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them"
Challenging experiences are not necessarily bad for employees
Healthy stress (Eustress) is invigorating
Unpleasant stress (Distress) can result in misery, accident-proneness and even ill health

Review of the European Week for Health and Safety
which focussed on workplace stress

Background
Nearly 1 in 3 of Europe's workforce (i.e. more than 40 M workers) report that they are affected by stress at work. Millions of working days are lost every year because of stress. That is why the 2002 European Week for Safety and Health at Work focussed on the prevention of psychosocial risks in the place of work and the stress that they cause.

Who is organising the European Week? It was co-ordinated by the Bilbao-based European Agency for Safety and Health at Work and ran in all 15 EU Member States and beyond. The Agency was the European Union (EU) organisation responsible for occupational safety and health information.

There is growing concern about the escalation of stress at places of work, and the United Kingdom has one of the worst records in Europe for long working hours and discontentment amongst employees. Owners, managers and public sector workers often have their share of overwhelming demands to cope with also.

The TUC (an organisation of Trade Unions in the UK) took this opportunity to launch a campaign called "Tackle the Hassle of Workplace Stress" (press release)
