should health decisions be made in the light of established science wherever possible?
or should over-riding consideration be given to the beliefs, experience and personal bias of the doctor?
should the final decision be left to the client or patient?

Healthcare professionals as authority figures MS

The healthcare professional as an authority figure

In days gone by healthcare professionals were demi-gods. Authority figures and "solution providers".
Gifted maternalistic or paternalistic worldly-wise individuals, fitted by vocation, selection, training and experience to lead the blind, ignorant and poorly-intelligent client out of a fear-laden, dangerous darkness into the light of validated expertise, personal integrity and dependable advice.

Alas, those halcyon days are largely gone. Some clients still prefer a "parent figure" and are happy to play by the old rules, but many clients/patients are now well-educated, well-informed, well-connected and increasingly disinclined to respectfully defer to someone with a professional title and a lengthy string of qualifications - not when their health, mobility, income, livelihood or reputation may be "on the line".

Is nothing sacred?

Actually, yes, something sacred did emerge to replace professional elitism - Science, Statistics and Reason!
